NCIL Program Description: The North County Indoor League is an indoor field hockey league. Indoor hockey is a version of traditional outdoor field hockey, initially played as a wintertime diversion for progressive hockey players to continue enjoying their sport year round. Indoor hockey is played on a hard, smooth and flat surface. NCIL is played at the Escondido Sports Center in Kit Carson Park on two full sized enclosed rinks. The rinks are smaller than an outdoor field, yet bigger than a basketball court. The enclosed rink keeps the ball in play and creates a fast, flowing and exciting game. Indoor hockey is a game of speed and agility. Hitting the ball is illegal. Therefore, proper indoor sticks are lighter than outdoor and quickly advance stick skills. Many players look to sharpen their skills by playing indoor hockey in preparation for the outdoor season. The NCIL started with 10 teams in 2006 and has grown to include 28 teams in 2010. Interest in indoor hockey continues to grow in San Diego, and this year, we will expand the league once more.
